Nordic Walking Week

by Active Edge Solutions

Monday - First Nordic Walk of the week and introduction to Nordic Walking for Peterborough Women's centre. A nice gentle introduction to Nordic Walking. For some reason it was promoted on the website as a cardio workout, which it is but perhaps not quite in the style of an Aerobic workout. The way that Nordic Walking differs to this type of workout is that it is lower in impact and big in results you get the cardiovascular system working effectively but it doesn't feel like hard work and you are not dripping buckets at the end.

Tuesday - Took us to the Peterborough and Stamford District Hospital on Thorpe Road for the Active Work Places program for Nordic and Fitness Walking, week 8 of their 12 week program. Our route took us along Thorpe Road, down to the rowing lake, we saw rabbits galore as we praticed throwing our poles to improve our techniques. Next week the vote was to start the walk at the meadows. Ladies and gents do join us again next week for another fun Nordic and Fitness walk.

Wednesday - Our second Living Sport - Active Work Places fitness session this week took us to Bretton, this time Royal Hoskoning our aim at week 8 was to complete a continuous loop of Bretton Park without stopping. We Nordic Walked we talked and took a totally terrific trip to complete the circuit of Bretton park. The invitation was extended to the YMCA to join in for a Fitness walk. Check out FUN FITNESS FRIDAY for the YMCA
The day progresses to another Nordic Walk at the meadows this time with the U3A, with the passing of the poles and a new route perhaps a slightly extended route the small U3A posse of Nordic Walkers were enjoying their new found Nordic Walking skills. Lots of fun was had by all

Thursday - Nordic Walk Improvers at Werrington, was yet again another totally terrific adventure, we took an intrepid trip, through Cuckoo's hollow and along a grassy banked dyke for a 3.74 mile Nordic walk. Thrush, blackberries and a heron were some of the delights we saw on our intrepid tour. Janet was amazed to know of this new route and totally surprise at my knowledge of the local countryside, she never ceased to be amazed by Nordic Walking and our intrepid adventures. Next week we are going for it - 4 mile challenge here we come!

Friday -
- Nordic improvers at Bretton Park. Our Nordic walk was a great circuit that took us on a reverse trip through the park to the east, heading along the network of cycle paths that link up our city in abundance. We took a brisk Nordic Walk along the route, through a treelined section, under a pass to complete our loop back to the park. According to Linda we took over 6000 steps during our walk. Linda who was our pedometer monitor and took it all in a her stride! Our fitness was also measured in terms of how far we could now go before energy levels started to feel a little low, the general concensus was much further and everyone was happy and finished on a high note. A BIG WELL DONE everyone!

Saturday - Private Nordic Walking introduction for a young lady who was looking to do something new, and came across Nordic Walking just by chance. The day started at 08:30 am, a nice breeze off the water by the lakeside, some sunshine warmed our skin and the opportunity to show my new T-SHIRT - With this session under her belt she will join our Learn to Nordic Walk group on Friday to continue her Nordic Walking Journey - This was topped by a Nordic Walk to have a picnic in the meadows by the sailing lake. A nice mixture turned up, a couple from the U3A complete with off-spring, children, grand-children and cousins - Phillipa, Margaret, Roy, Conny, Colin started our Nordic/Fitness walk, as we set of the rains came down and we had to cut our walk short so we didn't get too wet. A good time was had by all, next time it will be fine. Join us soon to start your Nordic Walking Journey. Contact: Active Edge Solutions to find out where you begin.

Map My Success...

Successfully mapped GPS route kindly donated by a regular Nordic Walker.
Recently I came across some really useful tools and in the absense of my own personal GPS gadet which let's face it are quite an expense and probably one most of us cannot afford or justify the expenditure on such a technical gadget.

Have you ever noticed that many people afford them despite the poverty they plead. Not me, when things improve it would be a useful investment, a great motivational tool and enable me to better do what I do.

So, let's look at how some FREE devices that can help you in the meantime to log your route, keep records of your workout and keep motivated towards your success.

Here are three great tools for success in mapping your routes, each one will help you to map your route easily and effecively whether you cycle, run, walk or cross-country ski ( aka NORDIC WALK) -

Useful tool number one: Mapmyrun

Useful tool number two: Mapmywalk

Useful tool numher three: Mapometer.com

All useful tools to help you with your success and I'm certain there are many others out there, these have been recommended by regular clients and associates for ease of use. I encourage you to try them out for yourself let me know how you get on and perhaps give me some feed back on these and other tools you might use. Take care, have fun and keep actively doing what you do!

About Active Workplaces - Active Workplaces - LIVING SPORT

Active Workplaces is a program where your company can benefit from a program of free fitness led classes. This will also help to motivate your staff, improve wellbeing, encourge them to become more active and improve their health through this exciting program. Each instructor is qualified to a high level and the programs offered are varied so there is something for everyone. Eg. Nordic Walking, Jogging, Running, Women's only fitness, Aerobics, Circuits, Football fit to name but a few.

In times such as these everyone is challenged and want more from their staff and this can have an impact on your staff and workforce. In many companies moral is at all time low.
One way to motivate your staff and encourage them to improve their health and fitness is to arrange an Active Workplaces Fitness session for your company it will really help boost your staff their moral and help them to deal with their stress levels.

Earlier this year in February Sue Burnett YMCA Qualified Personal Trainer delivered her first active workplace fit session to Hampton College, the staff found the session was fun, lively and invigourating. It was just what they needed to help them switch off from the stress and strains of the day.
Some of the fun fitness sessions that Sue Burnett is currently offering various programs which include GYM Fit Friday for the YMCA and an introduction to Nordic Walking to various companies in Peterborough. These are really going down a treat.
To arrange your Active workplace Fitness session contact Ejaz Moghul at Living Sports About Active Workplaces - Active Workplaces - LIVING SPORT or if you have used your 12 sessions and would like to arrange more for you company then contact Sue Burnett http://www.activeedgesolutions.co.uk/ direct to arrange private company group fitness sessions. Nordic Walking - New Territories

It was Thursday, our regular Nordic Walk night, 6.30pm. The would be Nordic walkers gathered in the car park at Werringtion Sports Centre, keen, ready and willing to walk. After the initial health checks that everyone was fit to go, no new aches, pains or illnesses we were ready to warm up. Poles in hand and ready for some Nordic Action.

Into the unknown the Nordic walkers went, the evening was light and for some it was the first lit walk of the spring. Their Nordic Walking had started in the dreary dark dank days of January, February and March. So you can imagine the their delight as Cuckoo's Hollow came into view for the very first time. Mallards, moorhens and ducks skimming the water, bullrushs long tall and punching proud heads into the light bright spring night. We practiced some Nordic technique down by the waters edge, not too close swimming was not on the agenda.

On we walked along a leafy wooded track, which blotted out the estate landscape. All we could hear was the point of the poles planting into the ground and the sounds of birds song lound and clear.

It became evident that the Nordic Walkers were delighted with the sights that came into view in the early evening light they remarked at how different it looked to what they had imagined on their damp dark and dank nights of the wintery months. The walk would not have been suitable for dark nights. Hence their joy, amazement and wonder. Even one of our group members who had lived in the area for 25 years was discovering new territories that he had not previously trod.

All too soon the time was marching on and we were approaching the end of the lesson and we had to return to the Sports centre. How far did we walk the group wondered. One lady had a watch with a garmin type device and she had plotted the route. 2.54 miles the walkers were delighted to have walked so far in such a short space of time. Energy levels increase the stresses and strains of the day had simply faded away. Everyone looking forward to the next one.

Do join us next time around, 6.30pm, Thursdays Werrington Centre. You will be pleasantly surprised, one Nordic Walker said " Sue can you find some more walkers to join us?" To which I replied "I will do my best, but do tell your friends and collegues now the evenings are light and the weather is better. It will be easier to pursuade the fair weather walker. The next taster session will be at Bretton Park, on Saturday the 01st of May. It is free but there is a small charge of £2.00 for pole hire." Tel: 01733 766 990 to find out more and how you can join in the Nordic Walking throng.
